PHS Host College Application Day

Poplarville High School hosted our first annual College Application Day on Tuesday, October 11, 2017. Seniors came into the library throughout the day to work on college admission applications. Students were encouraged to complete three applications for college, and we are proud to report our seniors completed over 200 college admission applications on Application Day! Research tells us that a student who applies to three colleges is 50% more likely to attend college than a student applying to only one or two colleges. The future is looking bright for PHS seniors! Students were also provided with resume examples and scholarship applications and links to help move them through the admissions process once applications were completed.

College Application Day is the first step in a 3 part initiative called College Countdown MS which is modeled after the American College Application Campaign (ACAC), a national effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. The primary purpose of this effort is to help high school seniors navigate the complex college admissions process and ensure they apply to at least one postsecondary institution.  For more information about College Countdown MS, please visit Get2College at https://get2college.org/collegecountdownmsapplicationdays/.
Step 2 of the initiative is for high schools to host a FAFSA Day. Poplarville High School will host our first FAFSA day for the 17-18 school year on Thursday, November 2, 2017, from 8 to 4. Seniors and parents will complete federal and state financial aid applications during this time. Parents should schedule an appointment for the FAFSA Day by contacting Tammy Ladner at 601-795-8424. We will host a second FAFSA Day on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Appointments will last approximately 30 minutes. After scheduling an appointment, we will mail home a letter detailing the needed items to complete both financial aid applications.
The final step in the College Countdown MS initiative is to celebrate our student success through an awards program. The senior awards program will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Pearl River Community College.
