Ms. Gina, Mrs. Davis, and Mrs. Burkett’s sixth grade reading classes expanded their reading palates with a Book Tasting. Students entered a restaurant-like classroom setting with a platter of books at the center of each table. They began the Book Tasting by watching book trailers for each book and had table discussions about the trailers. Teachers then reviewed and discussed different ways to preview books. Students then spent about five minutes “tasting” each book. The students used their Menu (brochure foldable) to assist them. When they finished “tasting” each book, students picked their top three books to add to their reading wish list. For the conclusion of the Book Tasting students completed a Reflection Napkin. Students used question stems to record their thoughts and feelings about the Book Tasting. The students were also served drinks and snacks by their teachers. The Book Tasting was a success because students were engaged in new genres, authors, and styles. The students loved books they never would have tried and enjoyed the atmosphere. Books are a lot like food – you won’t know if you like something until you try it!
