Students in Ms. Faith and Mrs. Hester’s 7th grade science classes experimented with various types of materials to determine the best thermal conductor for a house. They measured the temperature of hot water in water bottles that were insulated with newspaper, aluminum foil, a wool sock, and one with no insulation for the control. They read and recorded their measurements every minute over a five minute period. Students compared how the materials would prevent heat loss through the processes of conduction, convection, and radiation. Overall, students determined that the wool sock was the best insulator.
