Dinosaur Breath

science Students in Seventh Grade at the Middle School of Poplarville completed a lab called “Dinosaur Breath.”  Students learned that carbon can be stored in minerals deep within earth and that chalk is often made using some of these minerals. Students learned that since carbon is also found in carbon dioxide that is exhaled by humans and dinosaurs, hypothetically chalk made of minerals could contain dinosaur breath from the Jurassic period.  Using their prior knowledge students hypothesized that: If they mixed crush chalk with vinegar, then a chemical reaction would take place due to the reaction that occurs between vinegar and carbon.  The classes concluded that carbon dioxide is indeed a component of chalk as they had predicted.
