Sun Safety

Myth: People look healthier when they have a tan.
Fact: There is no such thing as a healthy tan.  The sun can cause wrinkles, spots, sagging, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Myth: Only people with fair skin are at risk for skin cancer.
Fact: Everyone is at risk for skin cancer, no matter what color your skin is.

Myth: Getting a tan at a tanning salon is safer than tanning in the sun.
Fact: UV(Ultraviolet) exposure from tanning beds is just as harmful to skin as outdoor sun exposure.

Myth: People need to apply sunscreen only once and only when they are outdoors on sunny days.
Fact: Re-apply a generous amount of broad-spectrum sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days.

Myth: Sunburns are not harmful to your skin.
Fact: Repeated sunburns can lead to future skin cancers.

Myth: A person needs to be in the sun for a long time for the body to make vitamin D.
Fact: Only ten minutes of sunlight a day is needed for the body to manufacture all the vitamin D a person needs.

Myth: Only adults need to protect their skin from the sun’s rays.
Fact: Too much sun exposure in youth can lead to developing skin cancer later in life.
