The Romantics Come to World Literature

In preparation for a literary analysis, students in Mrs. Aube’s World Literature class spent two weeks studying nineteenth century Romantic poets, including Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Wordsworth.  After a thorough introduction to poetry, students practiced counting iambic meter, studied how poets approach and develop the “sublime,” and argued about symbolism in various examples of Romantic poetry. To complete their study, students selected a poem from the nineteenth century Romantic period, prepared a claim based on their interpretation of the poem, and proved their claim correct by arguing the poet’s use of figurative language, sound devices, allusion, and symbolism. In lieu of the writing a traditional essay, many students “wrote” their literary analysis using Google Slides and found that pairing technology with their more conventional writing was the perfect way to share their findings with others.

Pictures included presentations on “Oh, Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman given by Skylar B.; “Because I could not stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson given by Holli A. and Gabrielle L.; and “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe as presented by Zac C. and Tanner M.
