Angela Smith – PLE Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Angela English Smith has been voted 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year for Poplarville Lower Elementary.  Mrs. Smith currently teaches English Language Arts to second grade students, but has experience ranging from kindergarten through third grade. A 1993 and 2011 graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, Mrs. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree in Elementary Education.

This is Mrs. Smith’s 28th year in the classroom. It is her second time teaching in the Poplarville School District.  She taught at PLE in the early nineties and returned to PLE in 2019.  Mrs. Smith also taught in Columbia, where she currently resides with her husband, Darren. They have three adult children, Jenna Storck (Caleb), Jace (Taylor), and Lane. She is a member of First Baptist Church, Columbia.  Mrs. Angela enjoys cooking, thrift shopping, attending sporting events, and spending time with her family.

In the classroom, she  wants her students to feel important and safe. Her intentions are for her students to know that they will always be loved and considered one of her “kids.”  Mrs. Smith enjoys seeing her students reach and surpass their goals.  Her favorite thing about teaching is that everyday in the classroom is unique and presents new opportunities to make a difference. Mrs. Angela also enjoys serving as a mentor teacher for university students to gain practical experience and complete student teaching. Last January, Mrs. Smith was named Nissan of Picayune’s Teacher of the Week.
