Poplarville varsity football was victorious over Stone County at The Hornet’s Nest on Friday, September 9th with a final score of 38-35.
Poplarville won once again in dramatic fashion as Austin Bolton crossed the goal line with just 1:45 remaining in the contest to give the Hornets their last lead of the evening in a ball game that the fans saw the lead change hands 3 times. Poplarville didn’t waste any time getting off to a fast start scoring on its first two possessions and taking a commanding 14-0 lead. Stone County would eventually find the endzone and take advantage of some Hornet miscues to make the score 21-21 at the half. The Tomcats came out and continued to control the momentum and success that they owned late in the 2nd quarter scoring TDs on their first two possessions. The Hornet Offensive Line led by seniors Austin Arceneaux and Evan Smith continued to dominate the Tomcat line of scrimmage and Jesse Pernell and Austin Bolton managed to find the endzone once each in the second half. For the second week this season a kick proved to be the winning edge as Nick Kirschbaum kicked a 36 yard field goal to pull the Hornets within 4 with just over 6 minutes remaining. The Hornets Offense finished the night with 370 yards on 57 carries en route to their victory over arch rival Stone County.
This past Friday, September 16th, the varsity game against Hancock County was rained out and will not be made up. The Hornets will be off this coming Friday, September 23rd, for their By-Week.
Hornets will resume action on September 30th when they travel to Greene County to begin their District Competitions.
