Hornets 3rd Round Bound

The Poplarville Hornets collected the first ever 2nd round playoff game in school history Friday night, defeating the Quitman Panthers 39-14.  Clay Garrett passed for a season high 102 yards and was perfect through the air completing all 5 of his passes.  Two of which found the endzone as Will Holliday hauled in a touchdown catch and Brandon McBride secured the second touchdown pass late in the first half.  Malik Lucas had 142 yards on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns in limited action due to illness.  Sophomore fullback Jesse Pernell found the endzone twice while carrying the ball 21 times for 79 yards.

The O-line led by seniors Justin Dugas, Joey Seal, Keith Dulaune and Kyle Stringer appeared ready to dominate the line of scrimmage Friday as they opened up holes continuously for backs to run through.  Sophomore Zac Rice also contributed heavily to the victory stepping in and playing more snaps than he had all season for an injured wingback Anthony Martin.  The Hornet defense held the Quitman offense in check for the entire evening.  Senior Keith Dotson was all over the field Friday night.  Stepping in for fellow senior Malik Lucas at running back, Keith had 90 yards on 16 carries.  Also on defense, Keith had 2 interceptions.  Jamerrick Waller was the leader in tackles with 5.

The historical victory sends the Hornets on the road this week.  Poplarville will travel to Purvis to tangle with the Tornadoes in it’s first ever 3rd round game.  Dress warm and make the short trip to support our boys.
