Mrs. Johnson’s third graders have been learning about perimeter in Math and animal habitats in Science. To make one connection, students were given a story about a zoo that needed fixing up. All of the animal fencings were dilapidated and in great need of being replaced. Students worked in small groups and used teamwork to create new containment areas with the correct perimeter needed. Students used dried beans to represent 1 foot of fencing. Upon completing the animal fences, students had to use creativity to design a map of what the new zoo would look like. This was a great hands-on experience that incorporated a higher level of thinking, team building skills, and the use of strategy and logic.
