MSP Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Ms. Leigh Ann Davis who was selected by her colleagues to represent Middle School of Poplarville as Teacher of the Year.
After graduating from Poplarville High School, Ms. Davis continued her education at Pearl River Community College where she was a student athlete and became the first female student athletic trainer. After PRCC, she continued her interest in athletic training and attended Mississippi State University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Ms. Davis has also furthered her education with a Master’s degree in Education from William Carey University.
Upon graduating from State, she taught for four years in the Clayton County School District located just outside of Atlanta. After teaching at Lovejoy Middle, Ms. Davis’s love for her family led her back home to Poplarville. Over the past eleven years at MSP, Ms. Davis has taught eighth grade science, Computer Discovery and ICT II, which she currently teaches.
About four years ago, her passion for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) guided she and her sister, Jill, to develop and sponsor an after school technology club lovingly known as Nerd Herd. This club facilitates a way for middle school children to learn about the quickly expanding world of computer science and the exploding technology career field through fun, real world activities, and lab experiments. Nerd Herd reaches out and welcomes students enrolled in the sixth grade through eighth grade.
After the first year, the program was expanded by including activities that exposed students to exclusive experiences while fostering a well-rounded individual through community service activities. Making Christmas cards for the Pearl River County Nursing Home/Pearl River County Hospital and assembling goodie bags for the residents of the Robert Lott Community home in Poplarville, a part of South Mississippi Regional Center, are just some of the community service projects of the Nerd Herd club.
Thank you Ms. Davis for all you do!
