This past week was a big week for Lady Hornet soccer. On Tuesday, January 12th the Lady Hornets faced Greene County in a big district match. Sophomore Amber Smith was able to find the back of the net early in the first half to give the lady Hornets a 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Barber stood strong in the net for the lady Hornets with 25 saves. The traveling Greene County wildcats applied pressure all night but with saves from goalkeeper Kaitlyn Barber and a good defensive stand the Lady Hornets were able to keep the Wildcats from scoring. The lady Hornets won 1-0 to give themselves a share of 1st in the district. Coach Smith adds, “Tonight was a big win for the girls. Greene County is always one of the better teams in the south in girls’ soccer and they have been playing together for a while. I was proud of how the girls never gave up. As their coach, I could tell they really wanted to win this game and prove to themselves we are a good team this year and deserve to be in the position we are in right now.”
On Friday, January 15th the Lady Hornets were able to clinch a playoff spot with a 1-0 win vs East Central in double overtime. Once again, Senior Mallory Nuccio was able to have a game winning goal with less than 5 minutes to play. Coach Smith adds, “Tonight I could tell our girls were tired and emotionally drained from Tuesday’s win. East Central also played very well and used their larger field to their advantage. But, as the girls have been doing of late we found a way to come away with a Win.”
The Lady Hornets are now 15-3-1 overall and 6-1 in district. They will play Forrest County Friday, January 22nd @ 530.
