Hornets Win Thriller in First Round

The Poplarville Hornets took a 43-40 decision in dramatic fashion in their First Round matchup at Bay High Wednesday night.  The Hornets trailed the Bay 19-18 at halftime and struggled early in the second half before doubling the Tigers up in the final period.  It was a fantastic, hard fought team effort that came down to the final minute.

With 2.45 seconds remaining senior Craig Barnes was called for a questionable foul sending the Tigers to the free throw line to shoot two free throws.  The first free throw hit the back of the iron and bounced out.

The second free throw almost looked identical as the Bay High player missed his second free throw.  What would happen next is sure to go down as one of the most improbable and amazing shots in school playoff history.  The rebound was quickly grabbed and the ball moved forward to senior Zack Taylor.  Taylor dribbled to half court and fired up a prayer as the buzzer sounded.  The prayer was answered for Taylor and his teammates as they stood in shock as the ball darted through the hoop.

As you can imagine there was a lot of celebrating, high fives and hugs in the bleachers and on the court.

With the win, the Hornets have accomplished two milestones that haven't been touched by a Poplarville team on the court in a long time.  The Poplarville Hornet basketball team has now tallied 20 wins and will compete in a second round playoff for the first time in at least a decade.

Poplarville will travel to McComb on Saturday to tangle with the Tigers!!  Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
