On Thursday, February 12, the choirs of Poplarville Middle and High Schools experienced a day they will never forget as they traveled to the Mississippi State Capitol to share their music and represent their community.
The students had the incredible opportunity to perform in the historic rotunda of the Mississippi State Capitol. Surrounded by the building’s stunning architecture and natural acoustics, their voices filled the Capitol with beautiful harmonies. Performing in such a meaningful and historic space was both an honor and a memorable musical experience for the young singers.
In addition to their performance, students had the chance to meet with local legislators including Jansen Owen, Stacey Hobgood-Wilkes, and Angela Hill. The senator and representatives took time to speak with the students, offering encouragement and sharing insight into the work being done at the Capitol.
The choirs were formally recognized during session in both the Mississippi House of Representatives and the Mississippi Senate. Being introduced before lawmakers was a proud moment for the students and director alike, highlighting their hard work and dedication to excellence in the arts.
The visit also included a private tour of the Capitol, where students learned more about Mississippi’s history and government. The day concluded with a special lunch generously provided by Representatives Owen and Hobgood-Wilkes, allowing students to relax and reflect on a truly special experience.
The visit was more than just a performance—it was a meaningful opportunity for Poplarville’s young musicians to serve as ambassadors for their schools and community. Their talent, professionalism, and poise made their hometown proud.
