Lava Lamps in Lumpkin’s Class

Lava Lamps

Lava Lamps in First Grade

Ms. Kathleen Lumpkin’s first graders at PLE enjoyed creating lava lamps to celebrate the letter L. They had a blast watching them come to life! In addition, they learned about how oil and water cannot mix and how to keep our oceans and ocean animals safe from oil spills to take care of our environment.

To make your own, the students wanted to share our science steps:

1. Add water to a clear water bottle about 1/2 full

2. Use cooking oil (we used vegetable oil!) to fill another 1/4 of the bottle

3. Add food coloring and matching glitter to make it pretty!

4. Break apart 1 Alka Seltzer tablet and add it into the bottle piece by piece

5. Watch the lava erupt!
