Hornets Run Out of Steam in St. Martin

The season opener began exactly where the jamboree ended as the Hornets quickly jumped out to a 14-0 lead on 6A foe St. Martin.  On the Hornets opening drive Jesse Pernell raced down the sideline for a 65 yard gain and he would later finish the drive with a 1 yard TD plunge into the endzone.  The Hornet defense quickly added a stop and put the offense back on the field with great field position.  Moments later Antonio Barnes connected with Austin Bolton for a 25 yard TD pass to make the score 14-0.  Unfortunately Poplarville would not find the endzone again for the remainder of the contest.  Jesse Pernell finished the night as the leading rusher with 122 yards on 17 carries and 1 TD.  Chris Fowler was the second leading rusher with 67 yards on the ground.  Antonio Barnes threw 8 times and completed 4 for 76 yards.  The Hornets will take a short trip down Hwy 11 this week to take on arch rival Pearl River Central in Carriere.  Poplarville has failed to defeat the Blue Devils in it’s last 4 attempts.  Take the short trip to Carriere Friday night and help our boys end this streak.  Go Hornets!!
