Principals Honored at PUE

Lynn Payne, PUE Principal, and Hilda Harwell, PUE Assistant Principal, arrived at work Monday morning to find "thank you" banners and posters around the school thanking them for their service to the school. Both will always remember the day and feel honored to work with a great faculty and students.

Several classes at PUE participated in a Live chat with astronauts from NASA. The astronauts spoke to classes all over the world from a space station about Earth Day and what it's like to be in space. Students were able to ask and answer questions to the astronauts about different things that they are doing to help the earth and our planet.

PUE Quest Archeologist

Third grade Quest students in Mrs. Tammie Payne’s classes were divided into teams and participated in activities that simulated the work of archeologist and paleontologist.  This unit was designed to increase the students’ knowledge of the work of scientists and of the dinosaurs they study.  The students completed several activities and had a lot of fun while learning about the dinosaurs and how the scientist searched for, dug and studied fossils.  Throughout this unit, the students also learned about the importance of following directions and telling time.

The Twelve Powerful Words

Mrs. Wells' 3rd Grade class worked hard to find the true meaning of each of The Twelve Powerful Words. They worked in pairs to portray the meaning of each word in a simple, memorable manner so that their fellow third graders would see it on their bulletin board and remember it when they take their BIG state test in May.

4th Grade Quest Students Present Simple Machines Unit

Students in Mrs. Renay Rigney’s Quest Classes recently presented their projects from a unit on Simple Machines to their parents and all fourth grade classes. Taught in conjunction with the K’NEX Education curriculum, this unit allowed students to build models of simple machines that highlighted mechanical principles and related them to the real world. The students shared their finished products along with snapshots from a Simple Machines Scavenger Hunt. The display featured pictures of common simple machines that the students located throughout the PUE campus.

The highlight of the presentation was the display of a 4 ft. tall motorized machine called the “Big Ball Factory.” During the unit, all 28 students worked together to build this complex design made up of various simple machines. They also sponsored a contest in which all of the fourth grade students attempted to guess the exact number of K’NEX pieces used to build the “Big Ball Factory.” The two overall winners took home a giant Hershey bar!

Mrs. Mayfield and Mr. Duckworth's classes have learned many interesting facts about honey bees. They learned of the important role bees play in agriculture. They also learned about the difficulties and problems that honey bees are facing. Both classes wrapped up the honey bee unit with a presentation by Principal Lynn Payne. Mr. Payne gave a presentation on beekeeping and on the process of honey making.

PUE Class Donates to SPAS for Holidays

Ms. Sharon Sanders’ 5th grade class had a talk about the holidays and giving/receiving. They all agreed that it’s not what you get that matters; it’s what you can do for others. With that being said, they decided to adopt Southern Pines Animal Shelter (SPAS) in Hattiesburg, MS, for the holidays. The class donated $100.00 and various items necessary for the operation of the shelter. Southern Pines Animal Shelter was very grateful for the donations. Way to go Ms. Sander’s class!
